Selecting a trim level allows you to choose specific features and options that you might not necessarily find on the base model, whether you’re looking for more capabilities, sportier styling, or added refinement.
A trim level refers to a hierarchy of vehicle features offered as a sort of package. For example, the Ford Escape has nine trim levels: S, SE, SE Sport Hybrid, SE Plug-In Hybrid, SEL, SEL Plug-In Hybrid, Titanium Hybrid, Titanium, and Titanium Plug-In Hybrid. If you select the Ford Escape S, you get the base model with the fewest number of features — and pay less. The Titanium is a more expensive premium trim that offers luxury features such as leather seats and a high-end sound system.
The 2020 Ram 1500 entered its fourth generation for the 2019 model year. It stands apart from the competition with its available premium interior features, like a 12-inch touchscreen, leather seating, chrome details, and an air suspension. Trim levels can signal information about the engine or body style. Ford hybrid models typically indicate that they have hybrid powertrains with their name, such as the Escape Plug-In Hybrid or the Fusion Hybrid SE. On other models such as the Mustang, the trim level lets you know what type of model it is. For example, there are Fastback trims with a contoured coupe design, as well as convertibles. The GT trim designates Mustang models that are specially designed for the track, such as the Mustang Shelby GT500.
Finding the trim level that’s right for you means balancing value and features. For example, if you want to save as much money as possible, then a base trim level is probably the best option. However, choosing a higher trim level will get you the latest infotainment features, luxury amenities, and premium safety systems.
